Carl Dellevie was born on May 5, 1811 in Rotenburg,
where he also grew up, as the first child of Peretz and
Jette Dellevie. In 1816 his sister Johanette was born, in
1818 Jeanette, in 1824 Mathilde, and 1828 Emilie. His
brother Meyer was born in 1831, but died just two years
later, in 1833.
Carl Dellevie's father, Peretz Dellevie, was one of the
Jews of Rotenburg who had the legal right to settle freely
in the kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) but, passing
this up, had settled in Hersfeld, while retaining their
residence in Rotenburg.
Carl spent his childhood years in Rotenburg, presumably
living with his grandparents. At the age of 14, he moved
to Hersfeld to live with his parents, who sent him to the
Gymnasium there.
On March 17, 1831, Carl Dellevie passed his Abitur
examinations at the Hersfeld Gymnasium. After studying
medicine at the University of Marburg, he worked as a
doctor and obstetrician from 1837 until his premature
death on August 9, 1847.
Carl's grandfather, Meyer Heinemann, the "court Jew" of
Rotenburg, had changed his family name to Dellevie in
1808.
