Sally Katzenstein was born on October 26, 1865 in Alheim-Heinebach, Hesse.  In 1924 he adopted his professional name, Franz Korwan, as his official first and last name. He lived for more than twenty years in Westerland on the island of Sylt. Here he worked not only as a landscape and portrait painter, but also as the leader of the municipal savings bank and as a member of the town council.  He perished in 1942 in the French concentration camp Noé. Little is known about his parents' background. His father, Baruch Katzenstein, was a cattle dealer. All that is known about his mother is that her maiden name was Jenni Wolff, and that her family worked in business. On the education of Sally Katzenstein only little can be said, but since his father held a post in the Jewish community of Heinebach, we can assume that Sally had a religious family life.

The photos show descendants of the Katzensteins on a visit in Heinebach, standing in front of the former living quarters of their ancestors.
