Drawn to Sylt, Sally relocated his residence to 10 Westerländer Strandstrasse (10
Westerland Beach Street, today number 12) in Westerland, and turned his house every
so often into a social meeting place. Here one would find distinguished company
coming together over tea or for a celebration, from the Munich court actor to the
Vienese publisher. Sally also established his first studio here. He signed his first
works with "Sally Katzenstein" or "S. Katzenstein," but his later works were signed
with his professional name, "Franz Korwan," which he adopted as his official name
in 1924.
In a civil marriage in 1894, Franz Korwan married Franziska Achenbach, who came
from the area around Gaggenau (in southwestern Germany). The relevant entries in
the Westerland church registry are: "Sally Katzenstein, painter, Israelite [Jew] –
Franziska Achenbach, Protestant." Just one year later, on June 19, 1895, their
daughter Erna Catharina Franziska Katzenstein was born. On January 2, 1908, one
year before his daughter was to be confirmed, Franz Korwan converted to the
Protestant [Lutheran] faith.
