The Strauss family was very much respected in
Huenfeld, equally with Christians and Jews.
Joseph Strauss was the supplier for the small
businesses in the villages all round. He bought
goods at wholesale and stored them in a ware-house behind the main building, from where the
customers would pick up their orders. The
warehouse used to be a garage since for a short
period of time Joseph owned a delivery van.
According to G. Eckert that van was destroyed
in an explosion or something similar. Mrs.
Strauss would take care of the office work,
however, when things got really busy, e.g. du-ring summertime with buying and selling blue-berries, she would also help out at the store. In
order to lighten her load a maid, at times even
a nanny would be employed. There was always a
sales clerk employed at the store. At first it was
Marianne Winkler (until about 1930?). La-ter on
it was Luise Bodesheim, a young Chris-tian
women, who would become ”Joseph’s
right hand”. After her marriage she moved as
Mrs. Breitung to Friesenhausen in the ”Rhoen".
