As of September 1,1941 Jews are only
allowed to leave their town of residence
in emergencies. In order to do so they need
a written permit issued by the local police.
Additionally they are forced to wear a
special sign of ID, the so called
‘Judenstern’ (Jewish star).
Marga and Manfred, too, have to wear the
star on their outfits. Only occasionally do
they leave the house now. The few things
that they are still allowed to shop for they
have to get early in the morning at Zoell’s
store prior to the arrival of none Jewish
customers.
Money for daily livelihood is scarce since
it has been quite some time that father
Abraham was permitted to do business as
a livestock dealer. Thus the family is
forced to sell out. After selling house and
real estate they move in with a Jewish
neighbor.
After Germany started WWII and invaded
Poland there is hardly any opportunity left
to escape from Germany. The borders are
closed, and not all countries are willing to
accomodate Jewish refugees. Furthermore,
in order to flee to a save haven abroad one
must have well to do sponsors and money to
boot. Neither Abraham Strauss nor
Herta or Feiber - both of whom are safe and
secure by now - can come up with a
sponsor or money.
There is nothing they can do. Thus Marga,
Manfred and their parents have to try to
hold out in Burghaun.
